Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science
A major in computer science is available through the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree program offered by the College of Liberal Arts. The BA major in computer science has the following requirements.
Computer Science
- CSCI 111, Computer Science I
- CSCI 112, Computer Science II
- CSCI 211, Computer Science III
- CSCI 223, Computer Organization and Assembly Language
- CSCI 300, Social Responsibility in Computer Science
- CSCI 433, Algorithms and Data Structure Analysis
- CSCI 487, Senior Project
- And one of the following:
- 15 credit hours of approved 300-level or above computer science electives
Note: Students planning graduate study in computer science should include CSci 311, 423, and 450 among their electives.
Speech
One of the following:
- Spch 102 Fundamentals of Public Speaking
- Spch 105 Business and Professional Speech
Mathematics
- MATH 261, Unified Calculus and Analytical Geometry I
- MATH 301, Discrete Mathematics
- And one of the following:
- Bus 230, Economic Statistics I
- Econ 230, Economic Statistics I
- Math 375, Introduction to Statistical Methods
Natural Science
- 9-11 credit hours
- any biology; chemistry (not Chem 101); geology; LIBA 150, 151, 205, 205L, 315, 315L; astronomy or physics;
- at least two courses must include a lab; two courses must be from the same subject of science with the third from a different department; each course must be a minimum of three credit hours.
- Two courses from one field (6 to 8 credit hours)
- One course from a different field (3 to 4 credit hours)
- Two of these courses must have a laboratory
English
- 12 credit hours
- WRIT 100 or 101; Writ 102 or Liba 102
- Two ENG 22x literature courses chosen from 221, 222, 223, 224, 225, 226, or 22x
Modern or Ancient Language
- 6 hours at the 200 level or higher in a single language
- Modern Languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, & Swahili
- Classics: Ancient Greek and Latin
- Communication Sciences & Disorders: American Sign Language
History
- 6 credit hours of any HST course
Social Sciences
- 6 credit hours
- Courses from Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, Psychology or Sociology, Liba 203 or 313
Humanities
- 3 credit hours
- Courses from: African-American studies; classical civilization; environmental studies; gender studies (G St 201, 202, 301, 304, 333, 350, 353, 391, or 402); philosophy; religion; Southern studies (S St 100-level only). Also, Hon 101 or 102, environmental studies 101 or Liba 202, 305 or 312 will satisfy this requirement.
- In addition, gender studies courses that are cross-listed with African American studies, classical civilization, English, modern languages, philosophy or religion or religion courses will satisfy this requirement.
Fine or Performing Arts
- 3 credit hours
- Studio and workshop courses cannot be used
- Acceptable courses: any art history (AH); MUS 101, 102, 103, 104, 105; Danc 200; Theater 201, 202, Liba 130, 204, 314.
Minor Field
- 18 or more credit hours of courses depending upon area chosen (see the Liberal Arts section of the catalog for descriptions of minors)
Overall
- Minimum of 120 credit hours
- One-third of total hours (40 credits) must be at the 300 level or above
- A 2.00 grade point average (GPA) must be earned in all work submitted in fulfillment of the degree requirements.
- A resident and overall GPA of 2.00 or higher is required in work applied toward the major
- A resident and overall GPA of 2.00 or higher is required in work applied toward the minor.
- For purposes of GPA, residence work is considered separately from transfer work.
